ANIMAL CARE TRUST MANGALORE - INDIA

This is a page introducing you to a lady called Suma from India who, against remarkable odds, runs an Animal Welfare Shelter in Mangalore, South India.

Suma first came to our attention through Ann Sherlock (whose parents have the Mallanigh Irish Wolfhounds). Anne lived in India for some years, befriended Suma and wanted to support the work she was doing there. Since then, when Anne returns to visit India she takes out whatever donations she can raise to help the shelter and we have become supporters of ACT through Anne.

Suma works at a full time job during the day but before and after work she goes to the Centre and overseas the care of the animals by the staff she manages to employ there, she deals with the authorities, raises money for the centre and ensures the animals receive veterinary attention. As you can see some of the injuries are horrific and result from neglect and human cruelty. The dogs live on the street and often their only hope of treatment for their injuries and the chance of a loving home is Suma and her team.

This rescue centre has built up from nothing but it relies solely on donations. We know that there are endless charities which need our help but we can't always look at the big picture, its just overwhelming, sometimes we have to select smaller ones where any amount we can give will go a long way. This is one case here, a pound goes a long way in India, £3.00 pays for a distemper vaccination for a puppy so you can see what we mean when we ask you to please consider donating to this shelter any amount you can offer - it will bring such benefit and hope to the animals there and the dedicated people working to improve the lot of the animals in this part of India.

Suma and her English friend Ann. Ann visits each year and takes out what donations she has managed to collect for the Centre, plus toys and practical things like collars and leads.

Some of the internal kennels.

The new kennel building. None of this is possible without donations from supporters of the Centre.

Veterinary Treatment is given to the animals to heal their injuries, puppies are vaccinated against distemper and dogs are spayed and neutered.

Many dogs and puppies are re-homed with families and live out their lives as family pets.

It isn't just dogs who need help, Suma takes in any animal in need - everything from Toddy Cats (pictures), to Cows.
